4 Tips to Travel Comfortably with Sleep Apnea

If you travel frequently, it’s easy for your nightly routine to change, which means you might forget about your sleep apnea treatment. It’s essential you continue your treatment, even if you’re away from home. 1. Carry your CPAP machine.
Your CPAP machine is a medical device, so it’s best to pack it with your carry-on luggage but check the airline’s guidelines first. Ask your dentist for a letter explaining that the device is medically necessary just in case you run into any complications. When you go through security, be prepared to place the machine into one of the plastic bins, so you may want to put it in a plastic bag to ensure it stays sanitized.
2. Consider a portable CPAP.
No one wants to carry around a large, bulky machine. There are several types of portable CPAPs on the market, which can be perfect if you’re a frequent flyer. If you choose one that takes batteries, be sure to pack extras, so you don’t run out. It’s best to try your new CPAP at home to familiarize yourself with it before you hit the road.
3. Pack an extension cord.
If you need to plug in your CPAP, it’s a good idea to bring a small extension cord with you in case there isn’t a power supply by the hotel bed. Many hotels offer extension cords as a courtesy at the front desk if you forget to bring one.
4. Take an adapter overseas.
If you’re traveling to another country, you will likely need an adapter for their outlets to plug in your CPAP.

An oral appliance can be the ideal treatment for people who travel often. As an alternative to a CPAP, you won’t need to worry about carrying around a machine. The custom-fit appliance looks like an athletic mouthguard; however, it repositions your lower jaw forward to keep your airway open. The small appliance can be stored easily in a purse, pocket, or small bag. You can skip the hassle of extension cords, outlets, or batteries.
If you choose an oral appliance, don’t forget to clean it daily when brushing your teeth before you go to bed. Whenever it isn’t in your mouth, keep it in its storage case to prevent damage and exposure to bacteria.
